Grace Hula Dance Company is a prospering entertainment company and dance school in the DFW area that teaches Hula, Tahitian, and Maori dancing.
Grace Hula Dance Company began oceans away in beautiful Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. It was founded by the current instructor and Alaka’i Hula, Grace Kalake Evangelista, in April 1998.
GHD moved to Texas in March 2001 and developed a small but growing student base, teaching Hula and Tahitian dancing. They performed at numerous local festivals, nursing homes, and schools; sharing the Aloha spirit that Aunty Grace Kalake instills with each student.
GHD was finally discovered when a booking agency saw them dance at an event. It was then, in the summer of 2002, GHD was booked for their first professional show: a birthday luau. From then on, Aunty Grace Kalake knew her Hula Halau (Hula school) was something more.
A division of the Grace Hula Dance Company was created soon after, specifically for performing at professional shows. The Grace Hula Wahine Dancers are now comprised of select GHD students that audition to join this prestigious group of performers.
As time went on, and GHD popularity grew, there became a demand for more dancers. A new division was then created: the Grace Hula Tiare Dancers, a group of potential Wahine Dancers that are specifically trained for professional performances.
Aunty Grace Kalake and her dancers started to attend even more Hula and Tahitian workshops to further their knowledge, and to pass on traditions to GHD students. It is important here at GHD that our students receive the best instruction possible, so all of our Alaka’i Hula and Wahine Dancers continuously learn from different kumus. This also allows us to give our clients authentic Polynesian dancing and entertainment.
Now, GHD performs more than 150 shows each year, with 198 shows in 2009, across Texas and in neighboring states.
